Canadian Passport Photos
CANADIAN Passport - PHOTO SPECS - You must submit two (2) identical photos with each passport application.
Your photos must be:
Your photos must be:
- 50 mm wide X 70 mm high (2 inches wide X 2 3/4 inches long).
- taken by a professional photographer.
- in color or in black and white.
- taken with uniform lighting and not show shadows, glare or flash reflections.
- centered and taken straight on, with face and shoulders centered and squared to the camera.
- taken with a neutral facial expression (eyes open and clearly visible, mouth closed, no smiling).
- clear, sharp and in focus.
- taken in front of a plain white or light-colored background with a clear difference between your face and the background. Photos must reflect/represent natural skin tones.
- sized so the height of the face measures between 31 mm (1 1/4 inches) and 36 mm (1 7/16 inches) from chin to crown of head (natural top of head).
- reflect your current appearance (taken within the last 12 months).
- original photos that are not digitally altered or taken from an existing photo.
- professionally printed on plain, high quality photographic paper (photos printed at home and photos printed on heavy weight paper are not acceptable).
- The name and address of the photographer or studio and the date the photo was taken must be provided directly on the back of one photo (see illustration above). The photographer may use a stamp or hand write this information. Stick-on labels are unacceptable.
- Your guarantor must clearly write on the back of one (1) photo: "I certify this to be a true likeness of (applicant's name)" and sign his or her name (unless you are applying to renew a passport, as no guarantor is necessary for renewals).
- Glasses, including tinted prescription glasses, may be worn in photos as long as the eyes are clearly visible and there is no glare in the glasses. Sunglasses and red eyes are unacceptable.
- There must be no reflection or glare on the face or glasses.
- Hats and head coverings must not be worn, unless it is worn daily for religious beliefs or medical reasons. However, your full face must be clearly visible and the head covering must not cast any shadows on your face.
- Your hair can be down.
- Shadows are not acceptable. Lighting must be uniform to avoid shadows across the face or shoulders, around the ears or in the background.
- Child photos must follow the same rules indicated above.
- Photos must show the child’s head and shoulders only. Parent’s or child’s hands must not appear in the photo.
- Passport Canada recognizes the difficulty in obtaining a neutral expression of a newborn and will allow for some tolerance in this regard.
- If applying for a one-time replacement passport for a child, you must include a photo that has been taken within one month of the date the application is submitted.
US Passport Photos
SPECS - If you are applying for a U.S. Passport, you must provide one (1) photo. Your passport photo must be:

Australian passport photos must be 45–50mm high and 35–40mm wide
Australian Passport and Visa photos for babies:
- The bottom of the chin to the crown must be between 32mm and 36mm
- Note : Australian passport photo head size is smaller than the UK
- Australian Passport photos must use the dye sublimation process and use high resolution
- Natural skin tones with good brightness and contrast
- No flash reflections and no red eye in Australian Passport Photos
- Neutral expression and mouth closed is required for Australian Passports
- Have a plain, light colored background (e.g. white, cream or pale blue)
- Australian passport photos should show you looking directly at the camera
- Your hair must not obscure your eyes or face
- Australian passport photos should show both edges of your face clearly
- Australian passport photographs cannot be digitally altered in any way
- No scarves or hats in Australian Passport Photos

- have your eyes open, visible and free from reflection or glare from glasses
- not have hair in front of your eyes
- not have a head covering (unless it’s for religious or medical reasons)

NEW ZEALAND PASSPORT PHOTOS
The requirements, explained below, are at the same quality level as for passport photos, however the photo size requirement may be different to your countries passport photo sizes. We strongly recommend using a professional photographer, or a business that is set up to take passport photographs.
Main requirements for acceptable photos, your photo must be:
Remove head coverings (including headbands) unless they’re worn for religious or medical reasons. Photos of people wearing head covering for religious or medical reason must show a clear, unobstructed facial image showing the hair line.
EU / EUROPEAN UNION
The photo should be 35x45mm. Close up of your head and top of your shoulders so that your face takes up 70–80% of the photograph in sharp focus. Photo background. Taken with a plain light-colored background, preferably grey, with uniform lighting and appropriate brightness and contrast.
The requirements, explained below, are at the same quality level as for passport photos, however the photo size requirement may be different to your countries passport photo sizes. We strongly recommend using a professional photographer, or a business that is set up to take passport photographs.
Main requirements for acceptable photos, your photo must be:
- the appropriate size (note that this is not necessarily the same size as a passport photo size)

- in focus
- in color and showing natural skin tones (no red-eye)
- unaltered by photo-editing software
- taken against a plain light-colored (not white) background. (Very important or they will not go through.)
- face the camera straight-on with head straight, eyes open and mouth closed
- look neutral - don’t smile or frown
- don’t have hair, head coverings or clothing across your face or eyes: your face must be clearly visible with no obstructions. Your hair should be pulled back behind your ears
- position your head in the center of the photo, leaving space around the sides and top of the head and hair
- remove sunglasses.
- your eyes must show clearly through the lenses, with no reflected light
- remove your glasses if they have heavy rims.
